For Letters To Myself I read an article about a way of building personal self esteem. It was about keeping a journal of letters that you write to yourself. You then answer the letters in a positive way. The idea is that we are far more critical of ourselves than we are of our friends, and this is a way of changing that mindset. I started to wonder about who would need to keep this sort of journal and the character of Cassie began to take shape. The book followed on from there. In truth, I sat down with only the idea of writing letters to yourself and the partially formed character of Cassie. Sometimes a book writes itself.

That's a tricky one! I don't know, I sit down and put my fingers on the keyboard and the words come. I keep a store of story ideas, and they pop into my head from the most random events. I might hear part of a conversation on the street, or read a newspaper article, or have an intense dream. My mind stores these things and then an idea will begin to spark. When I sit down to write the story makes itself known to me.

I have three projects I'm working on right now. I have the second book in the paranormal Defender series, Zora's Light, and I have the follow on book to Letters To Myself which will be Saffron's story. I'm also writing a weekly story in my blog, which I'm posting every Monday. This story follows Cassie, from Letters To Myself, in the time between when Letters To Myself ends and the new book (as yet unnamed) begins.

My advice to any aspiring writer is, I am sure, the same as any author. Write, write, write. Get into a routine of writing every day and stick to it. Don't try to be the writer you think you should be. Just as in society the best person to be is yourself, in writing the best person to write like is you. Be real, write from your heart and your readers will feel it. And read, every day.

For me, the best thing about being a writer is making the random thoughts in my head into a kind of reality. My characters live once they are in a book, readers relate to them and for a short time live in their reality. When I get feedback from a reader that they loved one of my characters, or one of my books, that's a great feeling.

So far I have not had writers block, although there are days when I look at what I wrote the day before and delete all of it...I think a routine is important, and I write every day. Some days the words come more easily than others, and that's fine. On the slow days I make sure my social media is up to date, and I catch up with other aspects to being a self published writer.
