Ailerona. It's "somewhere west of Laramie"...perhaps east. Either way, I've searched for this fictional land (by air in antique airplanes only) and am in no rush to find it, lest the search end.

Often, it's a simple word or comment dropped in my path that sets the process in motion. My first novel, Bootleg Skies, was based on an overheard comment about a 1920s airplane at the Antique Airplane Association's annual fly-in in Blakesburg, Iowa. Without giving away the plot, I thought, "Hmmm, that'd make a good movie." Since I hadn't yet learned how to make movies, I wrote a novel...something else about which I knew nothing. Never let ignorance stand in the way of creativity (or a political career).

Become an air traffic controller. The pay's good, and you get lots of paid time to write your first novel on the job...as I did. (Don't tell the FAA.)

I can't think of an answer to this question. Damn, I hate it when that happens.... Writer's block is like searching for my cellphone: I know it's right where I left it, but I can't remember where that where is. Funny, but it always shows up. When it does, it's full of new, unread messages that I then claim as inspiration... What was the question?

Muzzy, soon to be released, is a novel partly based on a real event, the 1960 midair collision (United and TWA) over New York City. I was six and living in northern New Jersey when it happened. Front page photos made a lasting impression...meaning scared the crap outa me. Oddly, I grew up to be a commercial pilot and air traffic controller, but the event noodled at me, so Muzzy became my way to explore what was a truly horrible event.

A novel: Muzzy. It's in the final production stages, so....Coming soon.
