I write a really demented short story and email it to my best friends. Then I go for a walk, listen to a podcast, get a coffee and get back to work.

Assholes no longer annoy you because you can use them as characters.

Fall in love with the creative process by committing to projects and finishing them. Start with simple ideas about worlds and themes you understand. Don't seek perfection or validation. Don't be afraid of failure. Those fears will ruin your relationship with your creativity. For a long time, everything you write will be really bad or just okay. Don't give up. Surround yourself with supportive friends and find good mentors. You might find an audience and you might not. Either way, seek out projects that challenge you to grow. Writing is also a form of therapy, a way to process the world around you. Keep going and read more books.

I swap between self-published books that my friends read and TV scripts that development executives read. Both groups are ruthless, but it helps you grow as a writer. Right now, I am working on a new script for a sci-fi comedy show called, The Beautiful. Next up is Book II of Killadelphia.

I have a very disciplined writing routine and I read a ton of books. The War of Art by Steven Pressfield changed my life. That book is my mental framework, my inspiration and my purpose. Besides that, I use my friends/family as a well of ideas and I try to travel as much as possible.

I was following a news story in 2007 when LAPD publicly ranked the city's top ten gangs and gang members. They were hoping citizens would use cell phones to offer up useful intel, but it backfired horribly when the gangs adopted the list as a competitive ranking system. At the same time, I was also reading Niccolo Machiavelli's infamous power manual, The Prince. The violent world of Machiavelli's Florence seemed to have a lot in common with the inner-city streets of America. A good/bad idea was born.
