Write a little every day. Even ten minutes is better than nothing. I wrote my first book on the commuter bus between Westfield, New Jersey, and Times Square. I don't commute anymore, so I write first thing in the morning. I make coffee, then I sit down and write, when almost everyone I know is still asleep. Solitude is essential to writing, and if you don't have it, you have to create it. Find a place where no one will bother you, and just start writing. Don't worry if it's crap. We all write crap. Eventually, something good pops out.

A book about returning to the small Vermont town where I grew up, after an absence of more than thirty years. I came home so that I could care for my mother, who was then 87. It's a prodigal-daughter story. Ultimately, it's about gratitude.

I'm just naturally nosy. People tell me stuff all the time that just blows my mind. They tell me because I listen. I'm a very good listener. That's how I discovered that my guide was a French spy. His own children didn't know that. Writing is my way of engaging with subjects that interest me. Other people take photographs. How do I get inspired? I try to notice when something is clamoring for my attention and just go with it. One day I might write about prisons, the next day about pantyhose. I just start scribbling about whatever is on my mind. If it's junk, nobody has to see it.

I went on safari in the Serengeti and fell in love with my guide. Three years later we got married. This is where "Our House in Arusha" begins. By then, my whole life had turned upside down, and I was trying to make sense of what had happened to me. That's why I wrote the book.
