So sorry I didn't see your response before our Book Club discussion. We were reading The Color of Water in July and everyone loved the book. Just wanted you to know that - We had a lively discussion and everyone was in consensus that it was a "good read"! Anything new coming out soon?

Loved your book and am getting ready to review it for our Monthly Book Club. We always like to share info about the author but i'm not finding much about you. Why did you choose to set "The Color of Water in July" in northern Michigan? Have you spent time there?
Nora Carroll Yes! The story is fiction, but the setting is based on the place where my family has owned a house for more than one-hundred years-- it's near Charlevoix.

What’s your advice for aspiring writers?
Nora Carroll Three pieces of advice: read, read, and read. The best way to learn how to write is to read everything you can get your hands on-- old and new, fiction and non-fiction. Every writer is first a reader.

What’s the best thing about being a writer?
Nora Carroll The best thing about being a writer is finding a form of expression for the stories that knock around in my head. The second best thing is working at home-- I'm an introvert and I love nothing more than being alone in a quiet office with no company but my dog and the sound of birdsong out my window. The last great thing about being a writer is hearing from readers and knowing that my words have touched someone.

How do you deal with writer’s block?
Nora Carroll Some days the writing flows more easily than other days, but I try not to let myself fall victim to the dreaded "writer's block." My motto is "it's easier to edit a bad page than a blank page." Even if I feel it's not working, I press on. I can always change it later-- and most likely will. Writing a first draft takes a lot of energy, but it's far from a finished product. I know that no reader will ever see what I've written until it's gone through many drafts.
