Jeremy E. Johnson Juliet was awakened shortly after midnight by something tickling her big toe, which was juuust peeking out from the blanket pulled too far up under her chin. "Try not to scream too loudly," said the voice at her ear.
Jeremy E. Johnson This is a tough one, with so many potential answers. Although I prefer his more overtly horror fiction, Clive Barker's fantasy worlds are so beautifully rendered I can imagine spending a long time soaking in the mythology during extended visits (as long as there's a way to get back to the real world before a titanic creature devours me).
Jeremy E. Johnson I am too far behind on Stephen King's latest releases, so I will probably catch up on those.
Jeremy E. Johnson I've found setting a rigorous, unwavering schedule will do the trick. Carve out a chunk of time for your writing process and inform everyone in your life that you cannot be bothered during this time. I've found putting on headphones with ambient music helps immensely to minimize distraction. Then write for exactly that timeframe, even if it's just a few words. Some days will produce very little, some days will be torrent. Hang in there, be consistent.
Jeremy E. Johnson SHEILA HELSING: DEMON HUNTRESS (my first and only novel so far) was conceived out of a love for the X-Files, hardboiled detective novels and video games like Quake. I wanted to create a rough-around-the-edges heroine detective with supernatural abilities. At that time, I was also studying feminist literature in college, so you'll see some of those influences as well.
Jeremy E. Johnson Inspiration comes from anywhere, at any time, but sometimes you have to work at it. I like to read "weird but true" reports from around the world, then try to come up with a simple framework to further explore that strange factoid.
Jeremy E. Johnson I write, produce and record an actual-play Call of Cthulhu podcast which allows me to stretch many creative muscles all at once, including writing new pieces of short fiction which are recorded like mini-audiobooks!
Jeremy E. Johnson Do the hardest thing: force yourself to write every single day, even if it's just jotting down cool ideas for a future piece of work. Also, don't be afraid to market yourself and your work; art and commerce can co-exist.
Jeremy E. Johnson Contemplating the impossible. That is, rendering possible (in print) what cannot exist in real life.
