Paula Priamos I get to make sense out of the world. When I wrote my memoir "The Shyster's Daughter" I was able to encapsulate my relationship with my father. There were a lot of dark times, but also some really good ones too. People might "Google" my dad and see certain things about him. But then they can also read my book and find out my truth. Nobody gets to take that away from you after publication. It's your story. It's out there now.
Being a writer allows your voice to be heard.
Paula Priamos My best advice is to write for yourself. Write stories that you would enjoy reading. Don't worry about what the world might think. That's all secondary. I'm always entertained by my own stories. It's like a movie reel playing out in my head.
Paula Priamos I started writing at a young age, we're talking the second grade. I was given permission by my teacher to write an episodic story in my daily journal instead of a day-in-my-life kind. At the end of the school year my teacher made copies for the entire class. That's what first inspired me to write. I guess I did it for myself then and I do it for myself now.
Paula Priamos I'm fascinated by what our own penmanship says about us, who we are on the inside, and what we might be keeping from others. Much of it can be revealed by the spacing of a word or a letter, which way it leans. I conducted a lot of research on handwriting analysis beforehand and during the writing of my new novel. Then I started thinking up my Greek protagonist, Catia or Tia, and saw the first cryptic handwritten note she finds under the corner of her welcome mat.
Paula Priamos I always hand write in a spiral notebook first. My belief is "hurry up and fail." Write your first sloppy draft that goes here and there and everywhere and then you have something to work with. That mindset has never failed me.
