I'm very fortunate--I've never really had writer's block. I take a blue collar approach to writing. I sit down with the materials I'll need for any one day and I start, with the same mindset as if I planned to build a piece of furniture. Of course, some days are easier (and more effective) than others, but I never feel stymied at the beginning.

In a very noisy and distracting world, it gives you time to think and to sort out your own mind. The process of writing is also intensely absorbing; it blots out all of the problems in your life and gives you a great feeling of calm.

Write. Then write some more. And be intensely critical of your own work. Also, after you're done, let it sit for a while--long enough so that when you return to it you are more detached and can edit it almost as if someone else wrote it.

No writing at the moment. I'm using my energies to promote my new nook Spacecraft: 100 Rockets, Shuttles, and Satellites That Put Us in Space (Quarto Publishing Group, September 2018). It's an oversize book with over 300 original artworks created by my collaborator, engineer and aerospace illustrator Giuseppe de Chiara of Naples, Italy. I accompanied Giuseppe's images with historical profiles of each the 100 space vehicles. Together they form a portrait of the most important artifacts of the space age.

I'm lucky in that I don't really feel that I need inspiration as such. I do need time, and an atmosphere of calm. Then, whatever comes, comes--sometimes pretty good, other times in need of repair. By repair, of course, I mean editing. To me, the inspiration comes with hard-nosed editing.

From my publisher (the Quarto Publishing Group USA). The acquisitions editor hooked me up with Giuseppe de Chiara, a brilliant Italian illustrator who proposed a book on the most important spacecraft of the space age. That partnership resulted in Spacecraft: 100 Iconic Rockets, Shuttles, and Spacecraft That Put Us in Space (due for release on September 11, 2018). Amazon offers the book on prepublication sale.
