Hi Anna. There wasn't an incident as such, but I was blown away by the Valley of the Kings. It is so - I hesitate to use the word 'desolate', but it is a world on its own. The Valley is unique and mysterious and yet quite peaceful. When I was trying to decide what to write, my visit to Egypt made me think that this was the perfect country in which to set a mystery.

Interesting because I actually know of someone who disappeared in Egypt. My neighbors' 25 year old son disappeared there. He was a ESL teacher AND an amazing musician.

I'm a pretty fast typist so it's not long for me! In fact I usually sit down to the computer to write with no idea in my mind where the story is going and it writes itself!

I write all my work in longhand, then transfer it to the computer. Although I can blind type with all digits, it still took me a long time to dream up and finish the novel(s).
I then found software, Nuance NaturallySpeaking, whereby I can dictate what I wrote into the computer, and this saves a lot of time.
Now I'm training myself to just take notes on each chapter – working out the layout/synopsis and dictating it directly instead of writing it in longhand in the first place. What used to take a year, I think will take at least three months, and in total five months including editing. ...more

Such an interesting question and variety of answers! I think my novels are 80% thought, 15% typing and 5% deleting! I write, from brain to page, slowly, but that draft is the only draft, I edit as I go. So taking away 2nd & 3rd drafts, I'm probably pretty quick! Not as good as Rita, though!

Seeing your work in print in paperback form.

I wanted to write something that would appeal to men as well as women and everyone likes a mystery. I am an avid reader so I suppose stories I have read and TV series I have watched must have an effect.

I'm writing a mystery this time and of course marketing is almost a full-time occupation.

Just do it! Now that you can self-publish everyone can see their words in print. One other piece of advice we all learn the hard way - edit, edit and edit again.
