Phyllis H. Moore I plan to read Into the Water by Paula Hawkins. I pinned a blog of 37 Books With Plot Twists That Will Blow Your Mind -https://www.buzzfeed.com/lincolnthomp...
I like a good plot twist, especially ones I don't see coming. Some of these books, I've already read, but Bittersweet by Miranda Beverly-Whitmore is on my list. I also plan to reread the Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood. I read it long ago, but I've been watching the series on Hulu and noticed there are minor changes. It's so appropriate for our times and I want to revisit the written word. I'll also be reading and reviewing indie books to help out my colleagues. Reviews are gold for indie authors and there are some good ones out there
Phyllis H. Moore I checked my Facebook yesterday and discovered some messages on messenger I didn't know were there. I'm not very up on technology. However, there was a message there from September, 2016 from someone saying they thought my husband's grandmother had been married to her grandfather. This was serendipitous because just last week, I published a book about my husband's grandmother and her only daughter, And the Day Came. We messaged back and forth and shared information and from the details, it is true. Myrtle "Heart" Johnson was married for a brief time to this woman's grandfather. She died in childbirth with his child in 1931. The child, a daughter, also died, leaving my mother-in-law an orphan and the story begins. Her uncles were determined to take care of her and kept information about her biological father from her. But the mystery has been solved and more characters have emerged. It's historical fiction because I don't know some of the characters, so I made them up, but the twists and turns in real life rival any made up adventure.
Phyllis H. Moore My most recent book is Opal's Story. I was talking with my father about a murder/suicide. We wondered about the reasons for such a thing. I did some research on the internet about the occurrence of murder/suicide and imagined how it could happen. I have always enjoyed visiting West Texas, the climate, the scenery and structures. I was also thinking about same sex marriage and the views of a changing society. All of those things combined, inspired the story.
Phyllis H. Moore I see a story in everything. When I started writing, there was a shift in my awareness. I noticed small events that could be incorporated or built upon. Silly things in the grocery store, conversations with friends, watching my dog, anything can be expanded to a scene or passage. I hope the descriptions make the characters and situations real for the reader.
Phyllis H. Moore I'm working on combining the short stories I have written into an anthology. The stories are ghost stories.
Phyllis H. Moore Write, read, write, read, write, read, write, read . . .
Phyllis H. Moore Writing anywhere or in my pajamas. Paying attention to every moment to use later in descriptions.
Phyllis H. Moore I have been writing seriously for three years. So far, I have not experienced writer's block. I let the writing flow and then go back and edit. I always have more content than I need. I cannot say how that happens. I enter a zone. If I had to think too hard about it, I probably wouldn't do it. For me, it's fun, addicting, not work.
