I'm slowly picking away at the sequels to both SKIN and TREASURE IN THE FLAME. My hope is to publish SKIN's sequel (tentatively called SWIM) in 2017. But I have a cross-continental move and a few other things on my plate this summer. We'll see how it goes.

In my case, one of the best things about being a writer is that I can carry my work wherever I go. I move a lot...my husband is an Air Force Officer and that means frequent relocations. There are still challenges...but all I need is a laptop and an active imagination and I can continue to work. I can create worlds based on these new locations, I can form characters based on people I meet and I can express my emotions in written form no matter where I am. SKIN's main character, Ocean, has facets taken from previous moves, and one of my currently unpublished manuscripts (tentatively called The Other Side of Home) is also a move-related story.
I love my portable career.

If you want to make writing your profession, you have to be professional. Expect rejection, and don't give up when it comes. Edit, edit, edit...and then edit some more. Make sure your work is seen by many sets of external eyes before you even think about submitting it to agents or editors. They have very little time to spend on each manuscript submitted so the tiniest little mistake can throw them off. And above all, believe in yourself. In the end, you have to be happy that you tried your best. And if this manuscript doesn't get published, maybe the next one will. Or the next one...

I push through. Even if what I write is absolute crap, it's so much easier to just write something--anything--down and edit it later. I often come back to what I thought was AWFUL writing and realize it wasn't as bad as I thought!
