The idea for Romance Is My Day Job came out of pre-wedding nerves. To distract myself, I participated in NaNoWriMo, two months before my wedding. This book was the result--though it's been heavily revised and edited. My amazement over meeting such a special person--when my ambivalence over relationships had peaked--just took over as I wrote my 1,667 words a day. Four years later, I still feel blessed (except for the snoring).

Either in enthusiastic bursts or dragging myself to my computer/notebook. This is sort of how I do housework, though I write more than I dust.

These bits of advice helped me, aside from "Never give up."
1. Be more attached to writing than getting published. Once I could do this, I had way more fun and felt less desperate.
2. Talk less about what you're writing until it's ready to go. No one cares that much, unless they're paid to care or have a vested interest.
3. Read and research. As an editor, I see lack of research all the time and it's an automatic reject for me. While writing my book, I read memoir after memoir. I studied the books I liked to read, as well as story structure.

I love when I can read something I've written and still like it months later. Also, hearing from readers who were moved by my story has made sharing it worthwhile. But perhaps the best thing about being a writer is the outlet itself. My ideas have somewhere to go.

I try to respect it and then bribe myself to overcome it. If I write for thirty minutes, I can watch Vanderpump Rules. I also remind myself that when I write, I am happier.
