These bits of advice helped me, aside from "Never give up."
1. Be more attached to writing than getting published. Once I could do this, I had way more fun and felt less desperate.
2. Talk less about what you're writing until it's ready to go. No one cares that much, unless they're paid to care or have a vested interest.
3. Read and research. As an editor, I see lack of research all the time and it's an automatic reject for me. While writing my book, I read memoir after memoir. I studied the books I liked to read, as well as story structure.
