Patience Bloom was born a month late to avoid being a Gemini--and those pesky '68 student uprisings in Paris. The rest has been a whirlwind of catching up: learning the 3 Rs in Upstate New York, Connecticut high school (Latin is not dead!), college in Ohio, teaching high school in New Mexico and a triumphant adult-relaunch in New York City, living on credit cards in a six-floor walk-up. Now she works as an editor at Harlequin, making books her biggest obsession aside from knitting, Duran Duran, super-bad reality television, and Anthropologie. These bits of advice helped me, aside from "Never give up."

1. Be more attached to writing than getting published. Once I could do this, I had way more fun and felt less desperate.
2. Talk less about what you're writing until it's ready to go. No one cares that much, unless they're paid to care or have a vested interest.
3. Read and research. As an editor, I see lack of research all the time and it's an automatic reject for me. While writing my book, I read memoir after memoir. I studied the books I liked to read, as well as story structure.(less)
Patience Bloom Either in enthusiastic bursts or dragging myself to my computer/notebook. This is sort of how I do housework, though I write more than I dust.
