I do my best writing first thing in the morning. If I don't start right away, I lose it. But I must often write whether I'm inspired or not. No matter the time of day or not, when I get into my story, the story inspires me to keep going.

I'm glad you asked that. I'm very excited about the book I'm working on now. It's set in the 1970s during the Viet Nam War draft. It's about a young couple who are madly in love and how their lives are dramatically altered by his decision about what to do about the draft.

The answer for me is simple: it's all I ever wanted to do. Despite this, I had to spend a couple of decades doing corporate work, most of which I hated, but it was a steady paycheck. Another great thing about being a writer is that, although you work many hours, you make your own schedule.
