(view spoiler)[I'd probably have to plump for Marcus Didius Falco and Helena Justina from the long-running Falco series by the wonderful Lindsey Davis.
Coming from a patrician background, Helena is expected to look elegant, marry a dull but respectable man and then stay at home raising the kids. The trouble is that Helena has a mind of her own and she's not prepared to accept her allotted role in society. Smart and sassy, she's the perfect match for Falco who comes from a working class background and earns his living by solving crimes, a disreputable and dangerous occupation in Ancient Rome. Their partnership isn't always easy but that makes it all the more realistic.
I also have a soft spot for Ross and Demelza Poldark from Winston Graham's Poldark series which is set in 18th century Cornwall. Ross can be a difficult man to love, especially in the earlier books, but for me his hatred of social injustice mostly outweighs his flaws. And Demelza is one of the great heroines of historical fiction - read the books to find out why! (hide spoiler)]

Unusual people and places inspire me. I love uncovering quirky little stories whenever I visit different towns, cities and countries. Sometimes they are stories about real people, sometimes they are folklore. I don't make a conscious effort to remember these things but often I find that quirky little things have lodged in my memory. When that happens, there's a good chance I'll weave them into a story one day.

Ha, good question! Some days I don't deal with it, some days I do. It takes discipline to sit down and write when you don't feel like it. All I know is that whenever I give in to the 'don't want to write' days, I end up feeling disgruntled and useless. In contrast, when I force myself to sit down and work, I often find that within a few minutes the writer's block is forgotten. Often, but not always!

I have just finished writing The Beaulieu Vanishing, a mystery novel set in late 15th century England. The central character, Francis Cranley, first appeared in my 2013 novel The Woodville Connection but the new book can be read as a standalone if you haven't read the first one. I am very pleased with it and I hope my readers will like it, too!
The Beaulieu Vanishing will be published by the summer. In the meantime, I am working on a young adult time-shift novel which I started several years ago and then put away in a drawer in order to concentrate on The Woodville Connection. My teenage daughter has been badgering me to complete the YA story since she found the manuscript a few months ago. After that, I have to decide whether to dive straight into another Francis Cranley mystery or to begin another historical project I've had in mind for some time.
