It's funny how the priorities shift when a 'block' starts to happen. The garbage needs to be taken out, recycling sorted, lawn mowed. The list of things that require 'doing' seemingly grows and, of course, while occupied, the 'task of writing' falls to the bottom of the list. When this starts to happen just stop. Put your writing on the top of the list. Then before you can get up to do anything else (including meeting a friend for coffee) you must write a set number of words (maybe a hundred) They might not be the most inspirational words you've ever written but they are now on paper and can be edited. If you do this, soon enough the flow of writing will once more be present and those one hundred words you chiseled out then become three hundred or more fluid words. Also set yourself weekly and monthly word-count goals.

The act of creativity. I may be a bit off on this one but I believe that the personal sense of accomplishment for what I and you write parallels that same sense enjoyed by the acknowledged masters. I am not saying my work (and maybe yours) is 'as good as' theirs but the cerebral and heartfelt rush one enjoys by writing that chapter, paragraph, or even sentence is rewarding, perhaps as much so as theirs was. Creativity and all that goes with it. That is "the best thing about being a writer".

Just write I suppose. Suspend all thoughts of becoming 'the next discovered talent' and focus on creativity and personal accomplishment. This is easier written about than done. Despite efforts for it to be otherwise, the feeling of disappointment of not gaining a larger audience sometimes creeps in.

I am currently working on a book that merges two worlds: the Irish and the Indigenous people of North America. It is historical fiction and though the envisioned story-line is mapped out, each segment requires an incredible amount of historical research (accuracy is imperative) so the writing pace is slow.

I have always wanted to write. Although I enjoy reading for entertainment I am mostly affected when stories have some depth of meaning. Hence my decision was to write 'thoughtful' literature. The problem with that it is not easily classified for marketing purposes. It falls under 'literary fiction' as opposed to something more specific:—paranormal, detective, romance etc.

The inspiration for In Search of Sticks came from the Ethiopian famine crises of the early eighties. Subsequent peripheral involvement (Foster Parents Plan etc.) provided further dimension to the story.
