I do something different. I grab my camera and go take some pictures. I color in a coloring book. I stink at drawing so I skip that. I take a walk on the beach or in the redwoods. I read. In short I get away from my laptop and get my mind on something else.

I get to make stuff up and share it with other people. I get to invite others into a world of my own making and let my characters show them around. How cool is that?

Read a lot. Write a lot. Real Writers Revise. Don't be afraid to try something crazy. Write what you're passionate about.
The first 2 are pretty basic, you have to read to know what works and what doesn't. You have to write a lot to get your mind accustomed to the practice. This isn't brain surgery, you don't need to go to school for years but you do have to put in some time and work honing your craft. You may think that an idea is far out and crazy, you won't know whether or not it will work until you try, don't be afraid even failures teach us something. There will come a point when you may try to write a certain kind of story or in a certain genre just because it's what's hot. Please try to resist that temptation, you'll create something lack luster that's not fun to read or write. Writing is at it's best when you're having fun during the creation.

I am currently working on the follow-up to 'Cast in Blood' the second book in the Morgan Blackstone series. The firs draft is complete and I am letting it rest while I get initial feedback.
While that's in process I am also writing what began as a short fairy tale but is spinning into a full length fantasy novel.

I make writing a daily practice. I try to write at least one thousand words a day, but sometimes I don't make it, and that's okay. Sometimes the words flow and other times they don't. I work in a space that has minimal distractions, for me music and movies I've seen before work to help tune out the rest of the world. I also try to work at roughly the same time every night, for me that's between midnight and 3am.
If I'm feeling blocked, I change things up. Luckily I have a laptop so I can grab that and go to a coffee shop or library to work. If I find that I'm still having trouble, I'll try writing longhand. If that doesn't work I'll take a walk, go take photos even color to change my mindset.

I was working on set one day and finished the book I had brought with me. This was before Kindle and eReaders so I had nothing to do. I found some paper and a pen and started writing. The story flowed from there the characters introducing themselves and telling me their parts. I'm not certain where the ideas come from and as long as they don't stop I'm okay with that.
