Ellen Bryant Lloyd The idea for my next Freckles adventure came to me when we took a trip to the mountains. I was reading a book about friendship, and wondered what adventure Freckles might have while visiting the mountains. The two ideas merged, and the next Freckles story became a story of what it means to be a true friend, set in the mountains during the early fall.
Ellen Bryant Lloyd It all started when I was assigned a book writing project in the 3rd grade (thank you, Mrs. Hill!). I had to write and illustrate an original story, then bind it together as a book. It even had a title page, table of contents and dedication page. I loved every aspect of this project, and knew then that I wanted to be a writer when I grew up. I still have this book, and share it with students during my school visits.
Ellen Bryant Lloyd I am working on editing the next Freckles adventure, editing a middle grade novel and halfway through writing a novel of women's fiction. I also have notes for a more edgy YA-- very uncharted waters for me. I definitely like having several projects going at once.
Ellen Bryant Lloyd Read, read and read more. I heard from an early age that a strong reader makes a strong writer. I honestly believe this to be true. I also think it is good to be involved in a community of writers-- critique groups, conferences, writers workshops-- all great places to learn and grow as a writer.
Ellen Bryant Lloyd I love having an outlet for all the creative thoughts and ideas that run through my mind on a regular basis. It is exciting for me to "see" what my characters are going to do next as I write. I enjoy being an integral part of bringing a story to life. I think being a writer is the most fun and exciting career ever!
Ellen Bryant Lloyd I have found that having several projects in process at once keeps me from having writer's block. If I feel "stuck" with one story I am writing, I move on to the next one. It is easy for me to shift my mental gears and write about different characters when another character or scene may not be cooperating in my imagination. So far this method has worked for me!
