My most recent book is part of a series I've been writing since 2014. Right now, what I am spending the most time on is a story based on my idea of what the shape of our universe might be.

That is such a wide net, and it has changed as I've grown as a writer. I first wrote to get out some of the pain of my mom's death. That writing was the basis for Cort Addison and The Warrior Chronicles.

I'm building a universe from the ground up. It and the technology I am designing for it will be the basis for all of my future science fiction work. The groundwork I am laying out now will increase the depth of my characters and stories, weaving them together into a tapestry rather than a group of stand alone stories and worlds.

Write your way. I wanted to write for years but I just couldn't do it the way teachers and mentors and other writers do. I don't have degree. I can't outline a story to save my life. I can't pass a creative writing course either. Yet here I am writing and selling books.
I have no idea what a story is about when I start it. Sometimes I hear a story on the news or see something happen in a video game, then imagine the conversation the participants might have. I've turned a unique voice on the radio into an alien species. I have lots of voice memos and notes in my phone, but not one outline.
So write like you depend on it, not like someone else does.

I can work anywhere. Camping, fishing, cooking, even watching TV. The world around me is both my office and my muse. I designed an upcoming drive system while playing video games this week. Anywhere you can think, you can work.

For me, writer's block happens when I try to tell the story instead of letting the characters tell it to me. If I try to force a plot twist that sounds cool or I put the wrong character in situation to tie something up, it always throws me out of the story. If I leave the character's head, I can't react the way they would, and when they react the way I would, it throws the story off.
If I still can't get it back, I'll move to another file for a while. Sometimes it helps to get you mind out of the game.
