I'm a stringent 'architect' and so my plans are robust enough to know where I need to go next almost all the time. Still, my output becomes sluggish at times or I find the forward momentum slipping into a dip and need to rescue it. There's no surefire way to deal with this other than lots of thinking and tinkering.

When you finish one piece, and then the next, and then the next, and you realise the wonderful places and characters and stories that you've pulled out of nothing and assembled in order using only the same 26 letters everyone knows and uses every day. It's a pretty cool feeling.

Realise the harsh reality that 'motivation' NEEDS to be backed up with 'discipline' if you ever hope to finish a novel and edit it up to standard. It's hard and it takes a long time, but the end results are worth it if you keep pushing through.

Most authors will say 'read, read, read!' and though I agree, I get my inspiration from everything from books to movies, TV shows, real-world developments and even music. There's a wealth of sci-fi multimedia out there to absorb and mull over, and for me it's quite easy to pick out the best ideas and mash them together into something new.

I currently finished writing Part IV of my Authority of Stars series entitled 'Friends of the Mountain', a horror/thriller based in a small colony town on the frontier of a fledgling planet. I try to sample different vibes and genres between instalments, and this was my long-awaited chance to try horror. Most ideas for this novel gravitated around wanting create a successful horror story that would be genuinely scary to read. Also, my previous novel (currently in the editing stage and entitled 'The Dreamer's Code') was a fun, planet-hopping action/adventure and I wanted to write something within a smaller, lonelier setting.
