Kim Pierce If you're like me, it allows you to get paid for doing something you love to do. I loved working at a newspaper - with its adrenaline rush of not knowing what will happen that you will need to write about. It also gave me a voice in the community - especially when I was writing about health and food - to enlighten and inspire.
Kim Pierce Take the time to get some training someplace. As much as writing is imagined as something that just happens, the reality is you'll write better with some education. Creative writing workshops are great places for this. I went through the Southern Methodist University Writer's Path program, which really clarified the nuts and bolts of writing a compelling, suspenseful novel. It also educated me about the publishing business. These programs are worth every penny for what they save you in time and frustration.
Kim Pierce My background as a newspaper journalist taught me that writing is a discipline, like going to the gym. You set a time. You sit down and you do it. If you're feeling stuck, you just start writing anything (source of the term "shitty first draft"), to grease the creative wheels. Eventually you'll get on to what you need to write and the other will fall away during editing/rewrite.
Kim Pierce My most recent and only novel: It's based on something that happened to me that was too powerful to ignore.
