Once I can set aside all of the noise, anxiety, and stress of life, stories flow onto the page. I am but the conduit. However, getting to that point often involves all sorts of odd rituals (long showers, booze, music, etc., etc.) and endless self-motivation. My writing group suggested “building a better factory,” that is, make your life and routine more conducive to writing. I’m going to keep working to build a better factory and we’ll see if, in the long run, it helps turn-out more and better stories.

I would say make time to just do it. Not in a Shia Labeouf kind of way, but make time in your life that you can be alone and create. It’s really hard to do. There are so many pulls on our attention and there is always more work to do, bills to pay, chores to do. But if you make the time to work on your passions, you won’t regret it.
I would also say, work on pitching your book/art/movie early. Practice your “elevator story” with anyone and everyone. It takes work, but you want to be ready when the offer comes in.
And be persistent. Edit, keep working, and never let one, ten, or a hundred rejections keep you from pursuing your dream.
Having a support group and people who are willing, and able, to give constructive criticism helps a lot.

I’m currently working on too many things. My first priority is to make the dramatic audio version of Filtered. It’s going to have voice actors and sound effects, even an awesome score. It should be really fun to listen to. Next in line is book two in the Great Society Trilogy. It’s going to take Evelyn to some really interesting places and I hope you are as excited to go there with her as I am to write it. Beyond that I’m working on two fantasy novels. It’s still a little early to divulge much detail, but I’ll have more updates towards the end of the year. Long term, I have dozens of stories in my “to-be-written” folder aching to see the light of day.

The germ of the idea came from my study of history. I have a bachelors and master’s degree in history and I spent most of my time studying the atrocities of the twentieth century. I think in many ways, the Great Society is my attempt to understand the totalitarian and fascist regimes that inflicted so much pain and violence on the world.
