Hi, I’m Gerald Lamb. I am a storyteller, filmmaker, historian, and occasional podcast host of Fiction Writer. I’ve been writing since I was a kid, using fiction to wrestle with life’s big questions and capture the small, human details that bring a story to life.

When I’m not writing, I’m often filming historical documentaries, exploring forgotten places, or wandering through archives in search of the next story. Whether it’s on the page, on screen, or through my podcast, my goal is the same: to tell stories that linger with you long after they’re over.

How do you deal with writer’s block?

However, getting to that point often involves all sorts of odd rituals (long showers, booze, music, etc., etc.) and endless self-motivation. My writing group suggested “building a better factory,” that is, make your life and routine more conducive to writing. I’m going to keep working to build a better factory and we’ll see if, in the long run, it helps turn-out more and better stories. (less)

There are so many pulls on our attention and there is always more work to do, bills to pay, chores to do. But if you make the time to work on your passions, you won’t regret it.

I would also say, work on pitching your book/art/movie early. Practice your “elevator story” with anyone and everyone. It takes work, but you want to be ready when the offer comes in.

And be persistent. Edit, keep working, and never let one, ten, or a hundred rejections keep you from pursuing your dream.

Having a support group and people who are willing, and able, to give constructive criticism helps a lot.
