One I definitely want to read is Girl on a Train. I feel like I may be the last person to read it! Oh! Another I want to read is something by Liane Moriarty, but I want to listen to it as an audiobook (hoping that I can find a book narrated by the same woman who did The Husband's Secret). I also recently discovered Lincoln Child, so I want to make sure I read more of his books.

This is a question I've gotten several times, and the answer is simple. I live out my fantasies through my characters and I've dreamed of owning a scrapbook store for years. This gave me a chance to create a virtual store and run it the way I would. I can close my eyes and imagine the store!

That question is a bit misleading. If I wait to get inspired to write, I'll write in spurts and fits. Instead, I treat it like a muscle. Write often, and the inspiration will follow. During NaNoWriMo, it was common to dream about my characters. Even now, when I'm writing on a regular basis, the characters "chatter" quite a bit. So, if you want to BE a writer, sit down and write on a regular basis.

Don't think of yourself as an aspiring writer. If you put pen to paper or keys to keyboard, you are a writer. Incorporate writing into your life. Schedule time for it. Subscribe to magazines and newsletters for writers. Study books on the craft (my personal favorite is On Writing by Stephen King). But most of all . . . write.

Ignore it. My job is to show up at the page every single day, whether inspired or not. If I'm feeling blocked on one project, I switch to another or change what I'm doing. I can work on something new, edit something I've already written, or work on marketing what's already out there. Another thing that works really well is to physically switch things around. If I'm feeling stuck, I might switch from my laptop to my Alphasmart, or take a notebook and write in longhand (that's a GREAT way to noodle ideas).
As an aside: writer's block was never an issue with Denim & Diamonds. I used my commuting time to talk out loud to my characters, and simply asked them what they planned to do that evening. It was a great way to keep the flow of words going!

I got the idea for Denim & Diamonds when I was working for a law firm. A client came in who had several horses, and they were her life. She wanted to provide for them in her Will, but wanted to set it up so that her beneficiary didn't get any of the money unless the horses were taken care of. That got me to thinking about people controlling others through estate planning, and the seed for D&D was planted!
