This answer may contain spoilers! Tom and Hester from Phillip Reeve's Mortal Engines, because they defy every convention. Tom starts out with a crush on a beautiful girl but ends up in love with ugly, mean Hester. Tom is gentle, sweet, and a bit bumbling, and Hester is cold, calculating, ferocious and hideous, to boot. They are beautifully written, full bodied characters and they make a wonderful (sometimes frustrating) couple.

I don't know. Sometimes the muse strikes. And when she strikes, I must write. She's very demanding. Ideas flit through my head, inspirations from anything around me, just whatever. Paintings, movies, books, people.

I am currently working on a nonfiction article, two or three stories, two novel ideas, and the sequel to "A Hole in the Ice." It's a planned trilogy, but book three looks long, so maybe it'll be four books.

Never Ever Ever Give Up. Even if you leave projects unfinished and always move on to another, keep at it. One day one of those projects will mean more than any of the others ever did, or something will just be "right," and you'll finish it. Keep in mind that Da Vinci rarely finished anything. Maybe you don't struggle with finishing like I did (and do) but it's the same thing, keep at it. Someone said (I don't remember who) that books aren't written, they're rewritten.

The best thing about being a writer is creating. Or maybe it's living in your creation. I don't know, I guess the WRITING itself is the best part of being a writer.

The inspiration for "A Hole in the Ice" is a complicated story. Different ideas that I came up with over the years got poured into it. The Weather Casters were inspired by a painting that has hung in my living room ever since I can remember. The characters were ones I invented for a game of make-belive that I played with my brother, and the game itself was inspired by a cross of "Pride and Prejudice" and "The Golden Compass."
