Carrie Vaughn Unfortunately, I'm not planning one at the moment. I have ideas, but I also have a lot of other projects I'm working on.

I have written some short stories in the setting --
"Learning Letters" features Enid. https://www.lightspeedmagazine.com/fi...

"Where Would You Be Now" is something of a prequel. https://reactormag.com/where-would-yo...

Thank you for reading!
Carrie Vaughn Hi Cal!

First off, thanks for reading!

Really, Kitty only has one one-night stand in the entire series -- the one in Kitty Goes to Washington. The series is actually known for not being very spicy, and not having any explicit sex scenes.

I'm not sure who would play her -- I'm not really up on actresses who are the right age for it. Kristen Bell was always my pick while I was writing the series, but that was a while ago now!

Thanks again!

Carrie
Carrie Vaughn Hi Julie! Great question, thank you for asking!

The standard is the author keeps the rights to the story. The magazine normally buys just the right to publish the story in a particular publication, for a specific length of exclusivity -- usually a year or so. (It's actually a red flag if a magazine asks for more than those limited rights.)

I've published in some of those magazines that were recently bought, and I've got a story coming out in Asimov's this summer. I'm hoping the new buyers have some ideas on how to revitalize the magazines, which have been struggling with all the issues that many print magazines have these days. We'll see!

Carrie Vaughn Hi Kristi! Sorry I didn't get to this sooner, I thought I had answered everything and then discovered this one, I'm so sorry!

I have ideas for more Bannerless stories, but I've had other work to do in the meantime -- lots of ideas, which is a good thing, but it means I can't always get to everything I want to do. I do have a couple of short stories that have come out recently:

"Where Would You Be Now" is kind of an origin story, and we see Kath as a young woman.

"Learning Letters" will give you an update on Enid!

Thanks for your patience!
Carrie Vaughn Hi! Yes, for the most part, but I still have a few short stories, and I'm writing a spin-off series of novellas about Cormac and Amelia. You can find them in "The Cormac and Amelia Case Files."

The novels, 1-14, are a complete series. The short story collections, Kitty's Greatest Hits, Kitty's Mix-Tape, and The Immortal Conquistador, have bonus material. Thanks!

Carrie Vaughn Thanks for the question! That came about while I was writing the first two books. When I got the contract for books 3 and 4 and realized this was going to be a longer series (I seriously had no idea the first book would take off like it did), I started doing a lot of long-term planning and figuring out the paths for all the characters. I had a couple of things I wanted to do -- I always planned for Cormac to spend time in prison, just because that kind of character hardly ever does and I wanted to flip that cliche a little bit. I'm also not a fan of love triangles, so that was another cliche I wanted to flip -- have Kitty be in a mostly stable relationship, and see what kind of stories I could tell about that. So, the relationship wasn't there from the start but that's how it ended up working out! Thanks for reading!
Carrie Vaughn Hi Joan,
Thanks so much for thinking of me, I'm fine. It's the area just south of Boulder that was affected, and I live about 15 miles north of there. But this was really terrifying and I know people affected.

Carrie Vaughn Thanks so much! Graff is one of my favorites. I don't have anything longer featuring him -- yet, I'm working on one, though.

I don't do very much in the space opera setting, but I'd definitely recommend MARTIANS ABROAD, about a kid from Mars who is sent to Earth for boarding school and it doesn't go particularly well. I think if you like Graff, you'll like the main character Polly.

If you like the personable main character with a strong voice, you might also like AFTER THE GOLDEN AGE, which is a superhero universe and the main character saves the day with accounting.

If you like stories more firmly set in science fictional worlds, try BANNERLESS, which is a murder mystery in a post-apocalyptic setting.

Thanks again for reading!
Carrie Vaughn This is a very flattering question, thank you! The single biggest influence on my childhood is probably growing up in the military. My dad was a career Air Force officer, 20 years, so we moved around a lot. I grew up all over the country, meeting lots of different people. I think it gave me a sense of independence because my environment changed every few years and I had to be adaptable. I also got to see how everything is connected -- region, politics, economics, etc. Dad's a Vietnam vet, so history was always really relevant to me, I've always seen historical events as something that affects individual people. And I also just really love reading and learning -- I have a Master's in English lit. My whole family is like that, so it all feels really natural.
Carrie Vaughn Thanks for the question, and thanks for reading! I have to be honest: I'm not sure. I have more ideas, but my writing schedule has been taken up with a couple of other projects at the moment. I may end up writing more short stories in that world rather than another novel right away. I'm sorry I don't have a more concrete answer for you!
Carrie Vaughn I'm not working on any right at the moment, but as I always say, never say never!
Carrie Vaughn Thank you so much for reading!

So, this isn't going to be a satisfying answer -- but yes, there will be a third Golden Age novel. I'm just not sure when. Soon, I hope. I wish I had a definite answer. But stay tuned, and as soon as I have news I'll announce it.

Thank you again for your interest!
Carrie Vaughn Alas, I'm not working on any more in that world right at the moment. Never say never -- I definitely have ideas for more. But other projects have taken priority right at the moment. Thank you for reading, I appreciate it!
Carrie Vaughn The novels about Kitty are pretty much complete -- if I do any more to continue that story, it'll be awhile. However, I'm still writing spin-off short fiction and novellas about some of the other characters, primarily Rick and Cormac, so keep an eye out for those. Thanks for reading!
Carrie Vaughn Thanks so much for reading! Things are a little up in the air right now -- I have a bunch of projects that will be coming out in the next couple of years, but I don't have firm dates for any of them yet so am holding off on making announcements until I do. Stay tuned!
Carrie Vaughn Thank you so much! Right now, I don't have a contract for more in the series. I do have ideas for what happens next, though, so I'll have to see what I can do to get those out there.

Carrie Vaughn I'll answer this as best I can! There's no audio version of After the Golden Age because the audio rights haven't yet been sold to an audiobook publisher. Print and audio are generally handled separately, and it's different companies that produce the audiobooks. (Some publishers also have audio divisions, but not all.) So, sometimes, the audio rights just don't happen, at least not right away.

I don't know very much about the costs of braille. A number of organizations work to provide braille books free of cost to those who need them, and most book contracts have a clause that the books can be made into braille without charge for these non-profit organizations. So I really don't know how all that gets handled.

I hope this helps!
Carrie Vaughn I'd always had a rough idea of what happened next. When the publisher turned down the sequel, I had to put it on the back burner. A couple of years ago I finally had some free time in my schedule, and was able to work it in with the idea of self-publishing it. Thanks for reading it!
Carrie Vaughn Hi Matt! Thanks for reading the book!

I left the timing a little bit ambiguous on purpose, since it's so hard to do real predictions on some of these things. I see it being about 150 years in the future. Polly and Charles are the third generation to live on Mars -- their grandfather was an original colonist. So, if there are colonies established in the next 50 years, then a couple generations after that... I hope that gives you a rough idea!

Thanks again!
