(view spoiler)[I was looking for a book about the Salem witch trials and discovered your book, The Heretic's Daughter. Yes, I had heard of it but had never read about it. Amazingly, Martha Carrier was my 8th Great Grandmother! Are you a descendant of Sarah Carrier Chapman? I am descended from Sarah's brother, Andrew Carrier, Sr. Needless to say, your book is the next one I'll be reading. Carol Kreider, Avon, IL (hide spoiler)]

Hi, Carol! I'm so glad you discovered Heretic's Daughter! I hope you'll enjoy reading it. My family is descended from Tom Jr. Fortunately, my grandmother had a lot of knowledge about our genealogy and I knew from an early age about the Carrier family. Best regards, KK

So many of the famous couples of literature are formed out of affairs because of unhappy, or unfulfilled, marriages, or the lovers meet with tragic ends. Evidently, a happy, healthy relationship does not make for sustained, dramatic reading. Hemingway's Frederick Henry and Catherine Barkley in A Farewell to Arms would probably be my favorite couple from "classic" literature, as there love is set against war torn Europe, and much sacrifice is asked of them. Although their story ends tragically, their love, while it lasts, is deep and true.

I was asked to create a short story for an anthology of contemporary crime--Dallas Noir. The lead character, Detective Betty, a strong, female narcotics detective who moved from Brooklyn to join the Dallas Police Department, stayed in my imagination, and when the publisher asked if I could develop an entire novel around the concept, I jumped at the chance. The Dime is the first novel in a planned series.

Inspiration comes from so many places: overhearing a conversation, a piece of music, reading a news article. Unfortunately, I have to do the actual writing in an uncluttered space where there is absolute quiet. Even background music can distract me when I'm trying to commit to paper (or computer) a cohesive storyline. My ADD keeps me engaged and curious about the world around me, but when it comes to writing about it, I have to sequester myself in a sort of cave-like environment. No writing in noisy cafes for me!

I'm currently working on the sequel to The Dime. After three historical fiction novels, it's been enormously fun working in contemporary crime fiction. The challenge for me now is to craft a narrative which is both connected to the first book, but also can be read as a stand alone book for readers who have not read The Dime.

Ah, the dreaded Writer's Block. Usually it happens to me when I'm distracted, tired, hungry, etc. A long walk, or even a drive in the car, will help to unstick the wheels of creativity. And sometimes, taking a break from writing for a day or two, will be enough to bring fresh ideas to the manuscript.

Hi, Jim, thanks for the question. The Dime is available for preorder now at Amazon.com and Barnes & Noble. And, until Feb. 14th, you can order the e-version at a special price of $7.99. Hope you enjoy the first of the Detective Betty series.
