Roger Gordon Sharing your thoughts with others. A sense of accomplishment when the task at hand is finished. Giving my imagination a workout.
Roger Gordon Do something totally unrelated to my writing project. Take my dogs for a walk, go to the gym, do some gardening, play my cornet, go to a meeting about environmental concerns, even write a letter to the local paper about pesticides. Anything but continue to hammer away at what I'm writing about. Cleanse the mind.
Roger Gordon Take some courses in creative writing, as I did.- not necessarily university courses, they could be community-driven ones. Join a writing group and mix socially and intellectually with other aspiring writers. Take criticism thankfully and not personally. Try and be patient, as the process of publication is another hill to climb once you have completed your writing.
Roger Gordon I am currently working on publicizing and marketing my memoir as it is self-published and I do not have the benefit of the resources supplied by a major publishing company. Beyond that, I have not decided how to focus my writing energies.
Roger Gordon Usually, an event will bring about an inspirational spark. For example, serving at a breakfast provided for street people, recognizing that the environmental group to which I belong is making headway in effecting a change in government policies, having an amusing conversation with the check out lady at the supermarket, reading a particularly ingenious passage in a book - all have stimulated me to write pieces for my writing group.
Roger Gordon After I retired from a 24/7 academic career, I found myself reflecting on my childhood. I decided that the best way to come to terms with some of the troubling thoughts that I was having, was to write them down. Once I started to do this, I realized that I had messages of interest to the broader community, so I decided to write a book. In doing so, I discovered that my childhood contained many happy memories as well as bleaker ones. It was a revelation to me.
