I am a retired university professor, scientist, and former Dean of Science. I grew up in Sheffield, England, emigrating to Canada in 1969. Growing up in the late 1940s to 60s, in the early post war years I benefited from a nurturing family environment. Gradually, my family transformed itself into a fragmented and dysfunctional unit, culminating in my parents' bitter divorce in 1961. I and others in my family were confronted with social stigmas of the day: divorce and marital infidelity. Compounding matters,mental illness, in some instances undiagnosed,affected several family members, including myself. Then, to complete the scenario, I experienced rejection by both my parents.
