Nick Wilgus Sorry for the late response to this. To answer your question, yes. I've been busy lately - I adopted a child with special needs and have been doing other things that haven't left me a lot of time for writing. But, I'm starting to get back on track. Thanks for reading.
Nick Wilgus Sorry for the late response - I've been distracted lately and haven't been visiting Goodreads like I should. My publishers usually do the audiobooks. I haven't heard of any plans for more, but I'm sure they would like to know of your interest.
Nick Wilgus Sorry for the late response to this. I'm currently not planning on a sequel to RAISE IT UP but several have asked so who knows? This book was very autobiographical for me so if there's a sequel, and if I'm honest, then the sequel won't be pretty either - it takes a lot for someone like Cyrus to get to a point of healing and moving on.
Nick Wilgus Sorry this is 8 months late! There is another book in the series called THE CURIOUS CORPSE.
Nick Wilgus No particular reason. When I first started the Sugar Tree series, all I had was an image in my mind of a gay single dad and his deaf son, and I knew these two people had a story they wanted to tell. During the first draft of SHAKING THE SUGAR TREE, Noah was not only deaf but autistic and not very communicative. About halfway through the story, though, he put his foot down and insisted on being portrayed as a happy go lucky kid. I had to go back and rewrite all his scenes - and I discovered he was right.
Nick Wilgus I'm afraid you won't be the only reader upset with me. I left several hints in the first two books that Noah was not expected to live, which explains some of Wiley's puzzling behavior, such as why he did not send Noah off to a deaf school. He knew their time was limited. Everyone did. Wiley's family dealt with it by keeping their distance. People do odd things when faced with such a situation. I always knew that book three was going to be about losing Noah - but also moving on. It was going to be about how life goes on even when we think it can't. It goes on, because it has to. I was afraid Noah would think I was a doofus for writing this book, but when I reached the end I realized he was on my side because this is his story - the story of how one small, fragile and seemingly insignificant life can have a tremendous impact. Ultimately this is a very hopeful, happy book and I hope readers will give it a chance.
Nick Wilgus Yes. The third book in the series is called GO TELL IT ON THE MOUNTAINS and has already been written. It's currently with the publisher. Look for it early next year. Thanks for reading!
Nick Wilgus That's a good question. I'm a father, so I drew on that experience, of course, although my son is not a special needs kid. None of the characters in the book are based on actual people, but they *are* based on the types of people I've met over the years. It's been suggested that the character of Wiley was based on me, but that isn't true. I'm nothing at all like him (though sometimes I wish I was). Thanks for reading!
