In the gathering darkness a long, swift train suddenly
Passes me like a lighting.
Hard and ponderous and loud are the wheels.
As ponderous as the darkness, and as beautiful.
I look on, enchanted, and listen to the sounds of lamentation
In the soft fragrant air.
The long rails, grey-dark, smooth as a serpent, shiver, and
A soft, low thing cries out in the distance,
But the sounds are hard and heavy,
In the air the odor of flowers and the sounds of lamentation.”

“নীরদবাবু আমাদের লেখা সংবাদ বুলেটিন দেখতেন; নিজের কার্যকালে অসীম একাগ্রতা, আমাদের কাজের সময় সংস্কৃত, ইংরেজি, ফরাসী উদ্ধৃতি শােনাতেন। কাশ্মীরি গেট থেকে হেঁটে আসতেন অফিসে, চোস্ত সাহেবী পােশাকে; গরমের সময় কিন্তু বাড়িতে থাকতেন খালি গায়ে, ধুতি পরনে। অফিসে কয়েকজন বেয়াড়া পাঞ্জাবীর সঙ্গে তাঁর মনােমালিন্য ঘটে। একবার একজন ষণ্ডাগােছের যুবককে মারতে উঠেছিলেন টেবিলের ওপর পা তুলে উদ্ধতভাবে বসেছিল বলে। নীরদবাবুর সঙ্গে যােগাযােগ নতুনভাবে গড়ে ওঠে Now পত্রিকায় সম্পাদনার সময়। এককালে তিনি শনিবারের চিঠি’র সঙ্গে ঘনিষ্ঠভাবে যুক্ত ছিলেন, কিন্তু বাংলা কবিতা নিয়ে তাঁর সঙ্গে কোনাে আলােচনা হয়নি। একবার সস্ত্রীক আমাদের মিসেস চৌধুরীর রান্না বিলিতি খানা খাওয়ান। কোন পদের সঙ্গে কোন wine পান করতে হবে সে বিষয়ে সাবধান করে দেন। তারপর নিজে তিন দিন অফিসে আসেন নি — অভাবনীয় ব্যাপার। পেট খারাপ হয়েছিল।”
