A New Yorker by birth, Eric Laster lives in Los Angeles. After a successful stint as a ghostwriter, Eric re-launched under his own name with the middle-grade novel Welfy Q. Deederhoth: Meat Purveyor, World Savior. Whenever he’s not scribing, Eric records punk rock and presses it to vinyl.

"Original and unfailingly entertaining from first page to last, Static by Eric Laster is deftly crafted and highly recommended for personal reading lists, as well as school and community library YA fiction collections."
Midwest Book Review

"Unusual and unpredictable….The posthumous bond formed between the brothers is touching and the mystery a genuine surprise." — Kirkus Reviews

Then please read some more. Not just books and blogs and articles that you find entertaining. Exercising the reading muscle is, I believe, akin to exercising the writing muscle. If you care about the craft of writing, the best thing you can do—besides daily putting pencil to paper whether you feel like it or not (your tools may vary)—is to read widely, variedly, and study how different kinds of stories are told. I have learned a great deal by reading books I ultimately didn’t think were a success: that whole what-not-to-do thing. So again, read. And encourage everyone you know to read, too.(less)

“The princess turns to him, serious. 'You are the one my great-grandfather spoke of: a denizen of Earth wearing a dirty apron who falls down a shaft and lands in sticky goo to lead the Brundeedle race out of Woe Time.':”
Eric Laster, Welfy Q. Deederhoth Meat Purveyor World Savior

“...to use the little kick of energy which opposition supplies to be more vigorously oneself.”
Virginia Woolf, A Writer's Diary

“One ought, every day at least, to hear a little song, read a good poem, see a fine picture, and, if it were possible, to speak a few reasonable words.”
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Wilhelm Meister's Apprenticeship

“Sentimentality, the ostentatious parading of excessive and spurious emotion, is the mark of dishonesty...the wet eyes of the sentimentalist betray his aversion to experience, his fear of life, his arid heart; and it is always, therefore, the signal of secret and violent inhumanity, the mark of cruelty.”
James Baldwin

“A writer should read until he is filled to the brim and like a pitcher which is over-filled over flows. And then he should write.”
Charles Nodier
