The first memory I have of constructing a story was when I was at primary school. I listened to Jeff Wayne’s vinyl LP of War of the Worlds. I was so awe I wrote my own story. Naturally it was a spooky tale about a haunted house. I then recorded the tale on a tape recorder. I remember being sat in a cupboard with my script and making all the sound effects from any rubbish I found.

At sixteen I attempted my first novel. I used to read a lot of my mum’s Catherine Cookson and Josephine Cox books so I decided I was going to attempt my own version of a northern clog and shawl clad heroine from the turn of the 20th Century.
