Writing is a solitary, anti-social, and therefore lonely activity, in many ways. And if you actually try to find an audience, you will face monster gales of rejection. So really, writing is only something you should do if you feel that you cannot stop yourself.

Now, assuming you can't stop yourself, my advice is this....write a book. Show it to no one. Write another one. Show it to no one. Write a third. Show it to no one. Now go back to you first book. Do you still think it's worth a damn? If so, then enter into the process of validating and editing: you will now be able to do so with more distance. If your first book is worthless, and now you know it, it's time to revisit your second, and then your third, and so on. Now repeat the process.

Oh yeah, and don't let writing get in the way of your reading--you'll never grow, if you're shackled to the limited traffic of your own mind.

Lastly, write under a pen name. It'll make you more honest and insulate your personal life from your writing life. I now realize that I should've done this from the start. (less)
Andrew Armacost Life is full of chaos, of randomness. Writing can give form to the seemingly formless, order to disorder.

“The basic formula of life... SURVIVE. EAT. SHIT. FUCK. BUY A HOUSE and DIE. It's all been scripted. But there's no need to see the second act. You already know how the play ends, don't you?”
Andrew Armacost, The Poor Man's Guide to Suicide

“Claudette wasn’t just my lover. She was also my best friend. I wish that on everyone. Sure, I used the money I made from bussing tables to buy her flowers or take her to a restaurant every chance I had. And sure, the mere sight of her silhouette in a summer dress was enough to make me pass out with cum in my shorts. But she was also my pal. ”
Andrew Armacost, The Poor Man's Guide to Suicide

“As long as there are things and idiots, idiots will break things.”
Mykle Hansen, Rampaging Fuckers of Everything on the Crazy Shitting Planet of the Vomit Atmosphere: Three Novels

“If I was a worrier I'd worry, but not being a worrier I'm just sort of confused and pissed off.”
Mykle Hansen, HELP! A Bear is Eating Me!

“Some managers hire people they're excited to work with. I prefer to hire people I'm excited to dominate.”

“A celibate clergy is an especially good idea, because it tends to suppress any hereditary propensity toward fanaticism.”
Carl Sagan

“If Mykle Hansen needed to eat puppies for breakfast to be himself, he would rap the table and scream "waiter, more puppy sauce!”
Garrett Cook
