Le jeune Jacques passe son enfance en Ardèche, dans un asile psychiatrique — dont son père est le directeur —, élevé avec les pensionnaires, dont l'un notamment donnera son nom à un poème, Chapurlat. À la mort de son père, il est élevé par son grand-père, notaire à Lyon. C'est pour embrasser cette carrière qu'il monte à Paris faire des études de droit. Étudiant à Paris, il consacre une part importante de son temps à l'écriture.
À Paris, il rencontre René Char, qui préface son premier recueil publié, Cendrier du voyage, chez Guy Levis Mano (GLM). Char lui fait rencontrer de nombreux galeristes, par le biais desquels il devient le biographe officiel de Miró.
