My mom passed away in July of 2011 after a year long bout with cancer. It goes without saying that was a very hard year, but we spent a lot of time together, which I am forever grateful for. By the time we realized it was incurable, we had already talked about her vision for the future of the series... and part of that vision included me. She wanted me to continue the series and her publisher was on board, so after a few days of hand-wringing I agreed. I honestly didn't think I could do it, but my mom gave me a lot of encouragement and advice. And I am a little afraid to say this, but I think she'd be proud. So, yes, in a way we worked on the last three together. For The Cat Sitter's Cradle, she had already written several chapters -- the client with the giant fish tank with a life-sized mermaid inside was her idea... so I just took that and ran with it. Now, when I write, I sort of feel her looking over my shoulder, so it still feels like a collaboration. (less)

That's Tom Hale! He's in the book I'm working on now:

Tom’s in his late 40’s probably, with a rosy round face, round wire-rimmed glasses, round head of curly black hair, and a round belly that Tom does his best to keep in check. He was married at the time of the accident, but his wife left him shortly thereafter. I don’t know the whole story — he doesn’t talk about her much, other than to say she apparently couldn’t handle the idea of living happily ever after with a paraplegic, so she left him for the first man who’d take her. I never met her, of course, but if I ever do it’ll take every ounce of restraint I have to keep myself from socking her in the face.

Words to live by from the great, the legendary, the trail...

Words to live by from the great, the legendary, the trail-blazing, the forever notorious Ruth Bader Ginsburg:

“Whatever you choose to do, leave tracks. And that means don’t do just for yourself, because in the end it’s not going to be fully satisfying. I think you will want to leave the world a little better for your having lived. And there’s no satisfaction that a person can gain from just, what p

“They say God never gives us more than we can handle, but sometimes I think God has overestimated what I can take.”
Blaize Clement, Curiosity Killed the Cat Sitter

“Protecting people from the truth is another way of shutting them out.”
Blaize Clement

“Perfume companies ought to bottle the smell of crisp bacon. Forget pheromones. I’ll bet a woman with a little spot of bacon grease behind her ears would attract every male within a five-mile radius.”
Blaize Clement, Curiosity Killed the Cat Sitter

“Staying in the safe darkness of memory and yearning is easy. Going forward to the light of possibility takes courage.”
Blaize Clement, Duplicity Dogged the Dachshund

“I always see to the dogs first and leave the cats and the occasional birds and rabbits and hamsters for later. It isn't that I play favorites, it's just that dogs are needier than other pets. Leave a dog alone for very long and it'll start going a little nuts. Cats, on the other hand, try to give you the impression that they didn't even notice you were gone. "Oh, were you out?" they'll say, "I didn't notice." Then they'll raise their tails to show you their little puckered anuses and walk away.”
