"This was not my favorite book, but I won it on Goodreads so felt I needed to finish and give an honest opinion. It was good that I kept with it as it did get a little better by the end. I felt the writing was pretty amateur. It had moments of me laug"

“Dr. Reeves stopped her and explained it was for the best if she stayed in bed. She refused to listen and pulled the IV out of her wrist. “The only thing I need”—she tugged at his lab coat—“Dr. Reeves, is blood. I’m a vampire!” She let go of him and bared her teeth. Jack immediately pulled his gun and pushed it under her chin.”

“Someone was standing there. A man dressed in a captain’s uniform. Richard’s heart missed a beat when he realized Captain McPierson was in the attic. The captain moved closer. Richard rose from the bed. His glance slid from left to right. A cold hand touched his face. McPierson’s wrinkled, gray face almost touched his forehead. “Kill her, before she kills you!” McPierson said, and crumbled into a pile of dust.”

“Joan looked up. The lights in the room were reflected in her eyes and the smile made her look younger. Her brown hair was pinned up and the silver earrings were the finishing touch.”

“For a moment he wondered when the Battle of Lexington took place as he crashed down on a chair near the window. He pulled out his cell phone and sought more information on the Internet. At least free Wi-Fi was available, and Sybil didn’t rule out the use of modern equipment. He snorted. It must be odd to see a man dressed up in an old-fashioned uniform, using a cell phone. He found all the information he needed to know online. The Battles of Lexington and Concord took place on April 19, 1775. It was the first defeat of the British army. Richard frowned. “So, I joined the losers club.”

“Richard squinted at an African American who made a move to sit across from him. The man wore a wig and was dressed in a rebel uniform. He was armed with an old-fashioned pistol that was ultramodern back in the day. “I hope you don’t mind me taking this seat?” he asked politely and lit a cigar. “This is a nonsmoking area,” Richard objected. “Oh, I’m sorry,” he chuckled, and put down his cigar. “I’m waiting for my friend”—he came closer toward Richard—“perhaps you know him. It’s Donald Maryland. The guy loves old-fashioned uniforms. Nazi uniforms, that is!”

“Six pale people wearing torn clothes came closer, sticking their hands out. Blood gushed from their necks. “We’ve come to get youuuuuuuu,” one of them, a woman, said in a spooky tone.”

“Joan burst out in laughter. “Haunted? Mr. McKenna, do you realize what you’re saying?” She took a step backward and put her hands on her hips. God, she looks amazing, he thought. In his mind he wanted to touch her and lift up the dress to feel the softness of her skin. Then he recovered. No, you can’t grab women by the pussy and— “Mr. McKenna!” Joan stated, and slapped him in the face. “What did I do?” he wondered. “You can’t grab us by the . . . well, you know bloody well what I mean!” Her nostrils widened. Richard touched his cheek, which slightly burned under his fingers. He didn’t realize he’d spoken aloud. But the damage was done. Two strikes, he thought. What happens at strike three wasn’t something he wanted to find out. He straightened his uniform and stood back from the counter. “Look, Joan. I didn’t mean anything by that. It’s just locker room talk.”
