Two Libertarians Go to the Movies (LCI)

This was a really fun one to record. We discussed how films can clarify values and give us the language to think about issues like liberty, faith, forgiveness, and atonement. I also got to discuss a few of my favorite movies with libertarian and Christian themes!

Can Libertarianism Be Reconciled With Your Christian Tradition? (LCI)

Whereas libertarianism emerged out of the insights and convictions of an 18th century European movement that is now called “classical liberalism,” Christianity was birthed in the first century A.D. Why then, if Christianity and libertarianism are fundamentally compatible, did it take so long for libertarianism to come about?

Should Christians Ever Kill? (Christianity Without Compromise)

Violence has become an assumed option for many Christians in war, politics, and even personal safety. But that wasn’t always the case. Christianity Without Compromise host Jake Doberenz chats with Jason Porterfield, Christian peacemaker and author of Fight Like Jesus, and Cody Cook, theologian and author of Anarchist Anabaptist, for a live roundtable on one provocative question: should Christians ever kill? They unpack what Jesus really taught about violence, how the early Church practiced enemy love, and why modern Christian ethics often distort that legacy.

I participated in a conversation about America’s foreign policy over the last 25 years and Israel’s outsized role in those decisions. It ended up being a thoughtful and substantive conversation!

Why Anabaptists Aren’t Like Other Protestants (The Protestant Libertarian Podcast)

Episode description:
In this episode I talk yet again with the great anarchist anabaptist Cody Cook. He is the author of two recent books on Anabaptism, The Anarchist Anabaptist and The Pocket Anabaptist. In this episode we explore what makes anabaptism unique and how it fits in with the wider protestant tradition. Cody explains how anabaptist have always been uncomfortable with state power, how anabaptists understand controversial theological issues such as baptism and justification, and why they are committed to nonviolence. We compare them to Lutherans, Calvinists, and other protestant groups, why anabaptism is compatible with anarchism, how modern anabaptists have compromised the tradition’s theology, and how anabaptists and other Christians can build ecumenical relationships.
