On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous by Ocean Vuong
"A really moving and gentle book about the (American) immigrant experience, (Vietnamese-English) bilingual existence, and queer identity. So many scenes cut deeply and bitterly. It’s one of those rare texts where even I can recognize and appreciate th" Read more of this review »

Not a bad read, and my first acquaintance with Mahfouz' work. Still, the rich and atmospheric prose of the first chapter did not stay on the same level in the following ones, and the humanity vs totalitarianism scheme was on the whole much weaker tha ...more
Rein and 5 other people liked Maija Olšteina's review of Jaunavas māciba:
Jaunavas māciba by Nora Ikstena
"Apmēram kā iesildīšanās pirms Mātes piena. Es teiktu - šis divas grāmatas var salīdzināt kā gulašu, ko gatavojis latvietis un ungārs. Viens labi domāts, garšīgs, bet neass un nesaprotams, ik pa brīdim uzkožas kāds melnais pipars, kam tur nav jābūt, o" Read more of this review »

The Witch who Trades with Death by C.M. Alongi
"Saw this on my feed (hi, Carol!), and the blurb had this priceless description

"A young witch forced to play concubine for her empirical captor"

What?

Empirical captor? And googling the sentence, there are some 150 google hits all of this blurb, and nob" Read more of this review »

“Kõik, mis on täiuslik ja vastuoludeta, peab kaduma. Täiuslikuks saamise hetk on tema lõpp-punkt, edasi pole tal enam kohta. Muidugi ei tähenda see, et ta kohe otsa saaks - aga ta sureb paratamatult, elu lahkub temast, ükskõik, kui kaua ta füüsiliselt siin meie keskel ringi ka ei liiguks. Ja see ei ole see täiuslikkus, mida teil enda ümber vaja on, uskuge mind.”
Rein Raud, Hotell Amalfi

“Love springs from the ability to prefer imperfection over perfection.”
Rein Raud, Vend

“Kõik inimesed on kenad, ainult mõned neist ei anna sellest endale alati aru,' väitis munk.”
Rein Raud, Ratsanik Melchior

Olla elus - siin on õudset riski;
verd ja higi, puid ja lilli ka.”
Juhan Viiding
