Charlotte Fairbairn was born in Scotland, educated in Scotland and at Somerville College, Oxford and has lived most of her adult life in Cumbria. Her work portfolio encompasses journalism, politics and the arts. Since 2015, she has worked at Lowther Castle, near Penrith where she is Creative Director. She was a founding director of Spiracle Audiobooks and with the historian and jouranlist Christopher de Bellaigue, is a co-founder of the Lake District Book Festival.

Charlotte Fairbairn has two adult children and writes song lyrics for her daughter, the singer Clara Pople. Her latest novel Cried out the River for Love came out with Linen Press in March 2022.
