Portillo's Hidden History of Britain by Michael Portillo

Full disclosure: I was interviewed for Portillo's programme on Shepton Mallet (not mentioned in the book) and found the experience very interesting.
Overall a useful and lucid spin-off from the TV series with some thoughtful observations.
