Jay Antani is a lifelong lover of stories, both the personal and the fantastic. He came to writing by way of film studies, commercial illustration, and film journalism. After receiving his MFA from USC, Jay published “The Leaving of Things” (Lake Union, 2014), an award-winning coming-of-age saga about finding one’s voice in a world of clashing and competing cultures. “Edge of Light” is a total departure, a YA sci-fi adventure set against the backdrop of war, environmental collapse, and a possible alien pandemic. As a fan of alien invasion stories, adventurous journeys, and conspiratorial thrillers, “Edge of Light” packs in everything Jay loves about the sci-fi genre while continuing his exploration of such themes as friendship, loyalty, and ...more

Everyone has that voice within them, eager to be expressed in whatever ways the individual has the talent for. All I can say is: Heed the voice, take workshops, start with the forms you gravitate to, learn others, learn the craft by practice, read works by your favorite writers and be inspired. After all that learning and practice, if the voice still calls, you're probably good to go. Now you just put everything aside and write. Take no prisoners. (less)

I like reading works by South Asian authors like Jhumpa Lahiri, Chitra Divakaruni, Arvind Adiga and Suketu Mehta along with my writing mentors Janet Fitch and Gina Nahai. They are all inspirational. Simply reading their words energizes the impulse to get on the laptop and try my own hand at literary craftsmanship. My literary heroes are too many to name, but I'll settle for Hemingway for now. EDGE OF LIGHT is LIVE!

Hello friends,

I just wanted to get the word out here on
Goodreads that my sci-fi-adventure-meets-alien-invasion-thriller "Edge of Light" was released this week (November 17) on Amazon, Kobo, Barnes & Noble (Nook), and Apple.

So, if you've been following me since the publication of "The Leaving of Things," I hope you'll take a chance on "Edge of Light." Buzz and reviews so far have been very good, s Read more of this blog post »

“we steadily endure our lives and ultimately we are alone in our endurance. In this aloneness, we find our strength.”
Jay Antani, The Leaving of Things

“It was all as I’d predicted. But just because you predicted something would happen didn’t make it any easier when it actually did.”
Jay Antani, The Leaving of Things

“sun hit the Taj’s marble dome full force, setting the whole structure and the minarets at each corner of the white plinth on fire. Whatever this was, I thought, it did not belong among us. A shimmering ark brought down to Earth. For an instant, I floated away, above myself, and thought I was looking at an exquisitely carved mountain of moon rock. It was more than the mind could take in at once. More than any camera could take in, for sure. Postcards and movies did not do this place justice; no photograph could.”
Jay Antani, The Leaving of Things

Topics Mentioning This Author

“A friend came to visit James Joyce one day and found the great man sprawled across his writing desk in a posture of utter despair.

James, what’s wrong?' the friend asked. 'Is it the work?'

Joyce indicated assent without even raising his head to look at his friend. Of course it was the work; isn’t it always?

How many words did you get today?' the friend pursued.

Joyce (still in despair, still sprawled facedown on his desk): 'Seven.'

Seven? But James… that’s good, at least for you.'

Yes,' Joyce said, finally looking up. 'I suppose it is… but I don’t know what order they go in!”
Stephen King

“One must live as if it would be forever, and as if one might die each moment. Always both at once.”
Mary Renault, The Persian Boy

“You do not need to leave your room. Remain sitting at your table and listen. Do not even listen, simply wait, be quiet, still and solitary. The world will freely offer itself to you to be unmasked, it has no choice, it will roll in ecstasy at your feet.”
Franz Kafka

“We are shocked by thieves taking pride in their clever touch, prostitutes in their depravity and murderers in their callousness. But it is shocking only because the atmosphere of the circles they move in is restricted, and - what matters most - we are on the outside. But isn't the same thing happening when rich men take pride in their wealth (which is theft), military commanders in their victories (which are murder) and rulers in their power (which is violence)? We do not see them as people who corrupt the concept of life, or good and evil, in order to justify their own situation, but only because the circles of people who share these corrupt concepts are wider, and we belong to them.”
Leo Tolstoy
