George Corley Wallace, Jr., was a segregationist who served as the 45th Governor of Alabama and a perennial Democratic or Independent candidate for the U.S. presidency. In the late 1970s—prior to his last term as governor—Wallace announced that he was a born-again Christian and apologized to black civil rights leaders for his past actions as a segregationist.
