First steps on Goodreads
Now that I've finished my first giveaway, I thought I should report in. I hope it was successful, but these things are so difficult to gauge. Among the hopefuls, one reader rated Guarded five stars, and another three stars. Why rate a book if you enter a contest to win it? But I was warned that Goodreads is not just a place for the decent reader who is trying to help other readers and wants to talk about the books they love and hate, but also for despots who rate a book on whether their giveaway prize arrived promptly, on the price of your book, or based on nothing other than you're competition to their favorite author and need to be taken down. But so far, my time here has been positive. One kind person even asked for a review copy, but she wanted a print copy. Sadly, I'm unable to do that.
Each time you enter a contest, you must send 1-5 print copies, let alone pay a fee for taking part. The giveaway alone costs the prize of a hardback, and I'm planning another one shortly. Then there's swag for my early readers, I must deposit two copies with the National Library at my expense, and after a while, the costs kind of spiral.
I write because I enjoy it. I hope readers like the fruits of my labor, but if not, that's okay. I appreciate all honest reviews. But I'm not into drama. I've known authors who've forsaken Goodreads, despite good reviews, based on too much negativity. I understand it, but, perhaps naïvely, hope it will remain a positive experience for me.
