I was writing a paper on the slave trade and relations between Native Americans and incoming slaves. I came across a flyer with the advertisement, "Why go North for Freedom when the South is Closer?" Doing research on this flyer I discovered that there were colonies at the Mexico Texas border filled with escaped slaves who wanted more escaped slaves to come south. They had started their own printing press to print and spread the flyers. From there, the concept of a Wild West town filled with Escaped Slaves was born. Facing Renegade Natives, Bounty Hunters, a harsh and unforgiving land with little to no protection from the Mexican Government, the new colonists faced a hard uphill battle. (less)
