Amy Gustine’s debut short story collection, You Should Pity Us Instead, will be published by Sarabande Books in February 2016. Her fiction has appeared most recently in The Chicago Tribune’s Printers Row Journal, The Kenyon Review, Alaska Quarterly Review, The Laurel Review and The Wisconsin Review. Her work received Special Mention in Pushcart Prize: Best of the Small Presses. She lives in Ohio.

It arrives from all directions, including news articles, conversations with friends, non-fiction books I read, life experiences. Sometimes it flames, then dies before I can do much with it. Other times it's a slow burn, and I end up writing something from a little idea I had years earlier. I sometimes start with a character, but most often I start with an intriguing situation, often a difficult one. Moral dilemmas are of great interest to me, so those types of situations often spur me to write.(less)

The stories range widely in place and time and were written over several years, and most found their theme unconsciously. It was only in the compiling for publication process that I recognized the common denominator--parents and children--and rounded out the collection with that in mind. (less)
