I also get lost quite a bit, and as a result, am forced to ask locals for directions. I never shy away from deeper conversations with people wherever I go, and love hearing about their lives and joys, trials and tragedies.(less)

I read this, and that’s saying something. I didn’t DNF it because I had the hope that as with Songs in Ursa Major there would be a redeemable turning point, a philosophical junction… well… perhaps, in my very short ‘pros’ column, I might say that the ...more

S.K. Conaghan is 10% done with Into the Blue: This is gossip mag juvenile script about another bunch of faux famous ppl I do not care about. Shallow character development, tell-all emotionally manipulative back stories, pop-references to cultural time markers that are meant to be nostalgic… Unbearable already at 10% … do I have the patience to continue with this? Feels like I should be grading it— and so far it’s not good news for the report card…

“My blood, my own red blood.
Is it friend or enemy?
Both, I say.
Choose the day.”
S.K. Conaghan

“So many books, so little time.”
Frank Zappa

“Traffickers will stop when men stop buying women”
Corban Addison, A Walk Across the Sun

“Wolf Winter,’ she said, her voice small. ‘I wanted to ask about it. You know, what it is.’

He was silent for a long time. ‘It's the kind of winter that will remind us we are mortal,’ he said. ‘Mortal and alone.”
Cecilia Ekbäck, Wolf Winter

“Late autumn this year had violence in her hair, angry crimson, orange, and yellow. The trees wrestled to free themselves of their cloaks, crumpled up their old leaves and threw them straight out into the string wind rather than just let them fall to the ground. Dry leaves ran across the ground with the crackle of fire.”
Cecilia Ekbäck, Wolf Winter

“Clocks will go as they are set, but man, irregular man, is never constant, never certain.”
Thomas Otway
