Since fifth grade, I wanted to be a writer, but that career path took several turns and I’ve been a piano teacher, a home business owner, a bookkeeper and mother of four.
As a family story unfolded over the years, I set out to make it into a novel. During the process I have realized that not only is truth stranger than fiction, but truth can also be told through fiction.
“Threaten to Undo Us,” is my first novel.
I’ve been married to Andy for 30 something years and live in Surrey, BC.

Right now I'm working on "On Hitler's Mountain," a memoir of a child growing up in Nazi Germany. Very good so far! I'm just about finished Willow Feller's "Piety, Pride and a cosy of Cures," and I relate to her in many ways. Next will be "The Mandibles" which our book club will be discussing. I got a Kindle for my birthday and have "Bishop's War" and "Past Encounters" loaded and hope to get to those as well. If there is time, one of Marie Ellen Wiseman's later books will be next. (less)

Seven lessons from a life well lived: Reflections on Queen Elizabeth

An intersection of reality and fairy tales

One of my grandmothers was English, so even as a child, I had an affinity for the Queen of England and Canada. A distant but noble figure, Queen Elizabeth represented the intersection of reality and fairy tales. On my German side, rumors of nobility persist—  making me wonder if I am distantly related to the royal family.

I’ve been to London to visit the Read more of this blog post »

Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn
“If only it were all so simple! If only there were evil people somewhere insidiously committing evil deeds, and it were necessary only to separate them from the rest of us and destroy them. But the line dividing good and evil cuts through the heart of every human being. And who is willing to destroy a piece of his own heart?”
Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, The Gulag Archipelago 1918–1956

Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn
“If I were asked today to formulate as concisely as possible what was the main cause of the ruinous revolution that swallowed up some 60 million of our people, I could not put it more accurately than to repeat: 'Men had forgotten God; that is why all this has happened.' ”
Alexander Solzhenitsyn

Martin Luther
“And though this world with devils filled, Should threaten to undo us,
We will not fear,
for God hath willed His truth to triumph through us.”
Martin Luther

Tim O'Brien
“That's what fiction is for. It's for getting at the truth when the truth isn't sufficient for the truth.”
Tim O'Brien

Pat Conroy
“Here's what I want from a book, what I demand, what I pray for when I take up a novel and begin to read the first sentence: I want everything and nothing less, the full measure of a writer's heart. I want a novel so poetic that I do not have to turn to the standby anthologies of poetry to satisfy that itch for music, for perfection and economy of phrasing, for exactness of tone. Then, too, I want a book so filled with story and character that I read page after page without thinking of food or drink because a writer has possessed me, crazed with an unappeasable thirst to know what happens next.”
Pat Conroy
