Pay attention to rates, experience, and the type of work this person t…moreSearching for an editor is overwhelming, not unlike the actual editing process. Pay attention to rates, experience, and the type of work this person typically edits. While I do believe that you get what you pay for, I have seen editing rates that seem totally inflated. Experience is important because you don't want to be an "editor's" guinea pig. And it's also helpful to choose an editor who frequently works in your genre.
Once you've got a list of potentials, read a few pages of books they've edited. I've found grammatical errors on the very first page of books that were supposedly professionally edited. That narrowed down the list quite a bit.
Finally, choose someone you feel comfortable communicating with. No matter how the process goes, it's going to be painful and strenuous. Your editor is going to make suggestions that will upset you. The process will be a lot easier to tolerate if you feel totally comfortable asking your editor any type of question at any time.
